Biography

Stephen Spottswood, a native of Silver Spring, Maryland, is a visionary musician and educator who has dedicated his career to inspiring diverse communities through the power of music. After relocating to Columbus, Ohio, he earned his degree in music education from Capital University. From 2012 to 2016, Stephen served as the Musical Director of Urban Strings Columbus, an inner-city youth orchestra, where he motivated and empowered young musicians.

Following his undergraduate studies, Stephen launched a dynamic solo career as a hip-hop and R&B violinist while also working as a middle school orchestra teacher. Passionate about bridging traditional and contemporary genres, he has inspired African-American classically trained musicians to incorporate modern styles into their performances.

In January 2020, Stephen founded the Columbus Cultural Orchestra, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at advancing a collective of multi-generational musicians of color. Under his leadership as Artistic Director, the orchestra has become a beacon for high-quality, genre-defying musical performances that celebrate cultural diversity and innovation.
